An Independent Visitor works with a child or young person who is looked after by the local authority, providing them with a supportive, trusted, consistent adult role model in their lives. IV's and young people go on visits/activities together once a month.

Could you make a positive difference to the life of a child or young person by becoming a volunteer?

An Independent Visitor provides regular support to a child or young person who is looked after by the local authority.  The Independent Visitor will take them out, do activities together, provide support and build a trusting relationship.

The key activities of the role include:

    To befriend a child / young person, establishing a relationship of trust and support, visiting the child / young person on a regular basis, making suitable arrangements with them and their carer and to be reliable in keeping those arrangements.
    To remain independent of the local authority and to promote the child’s / young person’s developmental, social, emotional, religious and cultural needs.
    To undertake activities agreed with the child / young person, which are suitable for his / her age, aptitude and ability.
    To undertake training and supervision on an agreed basis.
    If requested, to provide contribution to a case review by the local authority, which reflects the child’s / young person’s viewpoint.  This can be either in writing or the by invitation of the child / young person to attend.
    To refer to the service or in their absence the social worker any concerns about the child’s / young person’s welfare.
    To act within the Confidentiality Policy of The Children’s Society and the local authority, keeping any confidential information safely stored.
    To complete a written record of a visit within 7 working days of the visit taking place.

The skills and qualities required to be effective in the role are:

    COMMUNICATION: Ability to communicate effectively on all levels.
    EQUALITY AND DIVERSITY: To be non-judgemental and have an open attitude of tolerance and acceptance for the children and young people, whose values and behaviour may be different from your own.
    CHAMPIONING CHILDREN’S / YOUNG PEOPLE’S RIGHTS: Ability to question and challenge people, especially when decisions are being made about a child or young person, where their wishes or best interests are not being met.
    SUPPORT AND GUIDANCE: To give support to others and to receive support and guidance where appropriate.
    WRITTEN SKILLS: Ability to record appropriate information and produce this within a specified time frame.
    KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE: An awareness and understanding of children and young people within society

Requirements

Essential requirements: Must be over 18 years of age. Must be willing to travel. Must not be an elected member of the local council. Must not work for Children’s Services within the local authority. Must not be a partner of either one of the above. Please be aware that a degree of travel is likely to be required as around fifty percent of children and young people in care are placed out of their home area. We will apply for an enhanced DBS check (formerly CRB) for the successful candidate, as well as at least 2 references spanning the last 5 years. You will need to be able to commit to this project for a minimum of 2 years.
