Community History Volunteer

Suitable for -

Opportunity Description

Helping people who want to research local or family history using library resources within the community history centre at Wellington library.

Join a friendly team of volunteers who cover two drop-in advice sessions a week on a rota basis. Volunteers work in pairs to help customers with local history enquiries, those who are starting on their family trees or have 'hit a brick wall' and need a little signposting. Other tasks could include helping to create new library resources, other clerical tasks or stock promotion. There are additional opportunities to be involved with helping at the annual community history day, promoting community history projects with library staff, either within libraries or the community, and reminiscence sessions on various themes. Training and ongoing support is always given.

An interest in local and/or family history with good knowledge of either is important. Experience of a range of online resources, including Ancestry, Find my Past and other genealogical websites is helpful. You need to enjoy helping members of the public, be patient and have good communication and listening skills. Volunteers should be aged 18 years or over.
