Acton Burnell Castle

The dramatic battlemented red sandstone shell of one of the earliest medieval English fortified mansions, in an atmospheric woodland setting by an attractive Shropshire village.

It begun after 1284 by Bishop Robert Burnell, a local man who rose to prominence as king Edward I’s Lord Chancellor, its large windows demonstrate that it was designed for show rather than defence. It once contained the lavish private apartments at the core of a much larger house where Edward stayed in 1283, holding a famous Parliament nearby. Bishops Burnell’s impressive church stands beside it.
